When Ruarc did not answer her, Eryl's glimmered smile lost what little light it had. Her fingers rolled over in her palm, like the legs of a millipede waving along. As the other two carried on, she continued to deflate, more slowly and slowly. Her brain hit its trough, and she slumped her shoulders.

"Weeken–...," began Eryl in one of those voices that had trouble sounding audible.
"You may call me Ruarc, yes."
In an instant, her mind pendulated in the other direction: back-straight, face bright and wiggling on her cushion. It took great self-control not to show the celebration happening in her mind.

"Weekends are normally reserved for you, Jane," said Eryl, with more evident affection than she would if she weren't processing elation, "but I will have the Witch from Warsaw cover my post and my hexers while I am gone. It should be easy to arrange."
