[Intro] Battle Hymn of the Republic: Flight of the Bellicose

Post by Straken »

“Only the dead have seen the end of the war.”
George Santayana

Roughly a month had passed since Sean Kerning had taken up the role as Admiral of the Terran Hymn Fleet, and a month since the first battle he had waged as the Fleet’s CO to take out the Drathonian super weapon, Demonix II. It had been one of the most difficult months that Sean could remember offhand as the responsibilities of being an Admiral kept the aged man rather busy, and the battles with the enemy kept him on edge.

Now the old Admiral was standing inside of the large holographic projection of the galaxy as he reviewed both enemy and allied fleet movement as well as current battle zones. Casually, the man weaved his way through the galaxies systems, moving with dignity and poise that allowed him to stand as straight as a board while still being able to move unhindered. With a wary eye, the veteran judged and made estimates about the best course of action for his fleet.

The road that Admiral Kerning was tasked to lead his mean down was a precarious one, and the challenges were going to continue to get tougher, and more and more lives would ultimately pay the price for the ignorance of their bellicose leaders. Sean had felt the effects of the wars waged in the past, and while he never considered to ever be beyond the grasp of despair he now felt anguish that dredged up memories from long ago.

Despite all the shadows that haunted Sean’s mind, he nevertheless focused himself fully and completely on leading those under his command to victory, to freedom, and to survival. His resolve was steadfast an unmoving, for if he was going to live up to the trust placed on his shoulders then he could not afford anything less. It was also true to say that everyone, not just him, had a lot to live up to, for every Terra serviceman and woman had the faith and trust of the Republic at their back. As Sean looked out from his elevated post at the bridge crew that were going about their own tasks, the Admiral examined each one in turn and found himself pleased with what he saw; each member of the crew had a look of determination. No matter how small the task was the crew was dedicated, like gears in a well-oiled machine.

With a wave of his hand, Admiral Kerning dismissed the holo-map and with quick turn walked back to his command seat to sit down. “Alright crew, we’ve got our heading. Helm, approach the Warp Gate and set destination to sector F28. We are jumping thirty minutes,” Sean ordered his crew. “We are moving in to secure the location. Comms, inform the fleet and tell them to expect moderate resistance upon exiting the gate. Ten minutes prior to jump get all hands ready for combat Scenario Gamma, as soon as we are out of the gate we are launching fighters.”
With his new orders on the table, Sean settled back into his chair, rested his head against the back, and began considering possible situations that could happen on the other side of the gate and how he could best beat them.
