"Tch," was all that came from Astrid as she stood up. Finally, there was something to do. Heaving her hefty weapon up off the ground and onto her shoulder, the young German girl adopted a rather thuggish demeanor. Glancing back towards the others, she couldn't help but once again feel annoyed by the presence of other students besides Kara, though she boiled this down to Vrey's attitude and way of speaking. Letting out a harsh sigh, Astrid pushed the thought to the back of her mind, not because she didn't want it to bother her, so much as she just didn't care enough.

"It's a big bad wolf," Astrid stated plainly. "I understand plenty. If I can hit it, I can kill it." Tightening her grip on her weapon, she readied herself for the start of the exercise.

When Petrushka saw the wolfs she rolled onto her back and sat up, then looked over at them. "They taste rather well if you broil their meat for a few minutes and add some seasoning," she was drooling now, her hands up on her cheeks as she imagined wolf-treated meat in the form of a steak with mash potatoes and gravy. "The eyes also taste rather good, although the intestines are also quite tasty to once you drain them," she was completely caught in her own little world, not even realizing that she was saying things that.... probably shouldn't be said, her head bouncing from side to side as she made a rather childish sounding 'mm hmmm mmm'.

Kara wasn't sure what to make of the conversation. It seemed that the students she was with had completely ignored her suggestion of observing how the wolves interact, but that would only hurt them later, when they had to write their reports on the battle and their foes. "Ah well..." the Luxembourgian muttered, Shrugging. "Please prepare yourselves. I will be beginning the exercise momentarily."

Without any further warning, Kara crossed the magical line drawn in the ground and suddenly the wolves came alive. Half of them bolted immediately, while the other Half turned toward Kara, snarling and ready to attack the teenager, defending either their scavenged food or the part of the pack which had left. Quickly, the mage produced a small device in her hand, which she jabbed into the first wolf that approached, and then threw into the ground. The device had separated, half of it remaining in the animal and the other half embedded in the ground, creating a sort of magical tether. Swiftly using the Wolf as a springboard and launching herself in the air to avoid the other wolves which had lunged at her. She produced another small magical device, and threw it on the ground as well. It produced a small flash of greenish light as well as some green vapor, which dissipated momentarily, but whatever else it had done, it had caused the wolves to recoil and run away, leaving their tethered kin to its fate, despite its obvious attempts to escape. Landing on the ground with a small flourish, Kara muttered another enchantment and suddenly a ring of magical aura emitted from her, and the surrounding area was suddenly enveloped in a magical barrier that prevented anything from interfering, or escaping.

Vrey would notice that the effect of the circle had disappeared, and the others could tell as well, as it soon became obvious that the wolf had noticed them, and began charging at them, despite the tether. And then Kara snapped her fingers, and the tethering device extricated itself from the wolf, allowing the large beast to charge at the trio of young girls.

As the wolf charged so too did Vrey. The hairless girl took an approach that was head-to-head with the animal and sped forward as she allowed her lips to just barely curve upwards. Just as the two were about to meet and before the animal could shy away from the odd situation the third year ducked and skidded to the ground and slid underneath the dire wolf.

“Safe.” Vrey stated as she tapped her left hand against the wolf's belly as she flashed underneath it. Sliding all the way to the back of the wolf Vrey turned the skid into a roll and then sprang up into a jump that carried her back into the tree branches.

“The biting is gone now Kara.” The odd girl commented as she settled onto the branch she had landed on. “Caradoc tells me there will be no lances to complicate this test.”

Vrey rested a hand against her ear and then cocked her head to the side. “There apparently should be verbal encouragements enacted though.”

Petrushka, who was now laying on her stomach once more, watched with interest at how Kara and Vrey reacted; she was quite impressed. She could just lay there and watch them take on the wolf, singular that is, she would've preferred it if the other wolves had joined in and began their attack just to see how well the two could fight. It wasn't exactly a thought that was common for a young girl like herself... but then... she wasn't exactly young to begin with.

So, it was show time. With a reaffirming huff and a powerful stomp, Astrid set her posture and readied herself for a fight. Whereas Vrey had run away, Astrid had no intentions of budging from her spot. If the wolf wanted a fight, then so did she. Raising her large weapon above her head like a baseball bat with magically enhanced strength, she shifted into a batter's stance as she anticipated contact with the wolf charging towards her and Petrushka's position.

"This better not be as easy as one swing," Astrid said as she began her swing when the wolf neared the desired distance, and growling back at the dire animal as she faced off against the large beast.

"Awww! It wants to play!" Petrushka giggled childishly as she watched the wolf close ranks with her and Astrid. "Awww... but even though I want to play with it and turn into my pet, I guess I can't," she closed her eyes and sighed depressingly, then they shoot open. Her eyes, which were originally blue, now glowed a nice red color as she jumped up onto her feet and then took one of her long finger nails and cut into the palm of her left hand. She took her right hand and brought it over to her palm and grabbed something that wasn't there.

Except.. that something 'was' there, she pulled a bloody sword out of the cut she had made and then put herself into a battle stance. "Let's dance wolfy!"

Astrid would likelye be surprised when, without warning, her Shotsubo stopped. a combination of raw strength and speed cancelled out the force of momentum the bat-like weapon swung with as the Dire wolf clamped its metal shaft in its mouth, which, somehow, remained undamaged. As dust billowed up around the creature from its feet skidding on the ground in a sudden stop, it was obscured from Astrid and Petrushka's vision, but, it was not hard to guess what it did as the small Astrid felt herself lifted by her own weapon and thrown aside, brutally slamming into a tree with a loud, cracking thud, as both the tree;'s limbs and a couple of the girl's ribs broke from the impact.

Petrushka was now left alone, with her blood-formed blade being the only defense between herself and the Dire wolf which was several times her size. It began to growl, glaring down at the girl with the murderous gaze of a cornered animal. It began to circle her, sidestepping gingerly away from Astrid, putting Petrushka between itself and the smaller girl. Apparently, it was waiting for its target to make the first move, showing itself to be much more intelligent than it looked.

"I would suggest magic," Kara shouted, having scrambled into a tree herself to observe the battle from above. "Dire wolves have a wonderful resistance to physical attacks, but pure magic seems to be extra effective as a trade off."
