[Safeholme Dorms] Creature Discomforts

Post by Kokuten »

Down the road were the Safeholme Dorms, a series of a colorful apartments that contrasted against the refined tastes of the Safeholme Mance. The Dormitories were a singular building, four stories tall, with runic symbols chiseled throughout the structure. These appeared as pleasant markings on the building's architecture and design, but the trained eye would see them as spell wards enhanced with a thick layer of treated, mana-infused sap. Rules were posted on the front wall of the building for all to see, detailing the do's and don'ts of the dorms, along with very clearly stated quiet hours. A small green area spaced the front from the street, with a small fountain and a few benches, alongside the various mailboxes that were assigned to each dorm. At the corners of the property stood lanterns, that seemed to burn throughout the day and through the night, with a hazy smoke that smelled pleasantly of lavender.

There was a safe feeling to the place, as if every precaution had been taken to turn the living area into a resistant haven. Spells would work fine on the premises, but would be hard pressed to affect the structure without great effort. This hardened exterior meant that tricksters would have trouble phasing through the walls as well. In fact,t he torches burned gossamer-willow leaves, a mystic, welsh green that was resistant to fire and made pungent, disgusting odors to the unnatural and otherworldly animals that could prowl about. Even the fountain was prepared, with heavensbirch wood filters to give the water a healing, refreshing quality.

The students were explained everything as they were brought to the dormitories at the end of the day, particularly Willow and Drysi. The two of them were in 4J, on the top, all the way at the end. They had a decent view of the city as far as the buildings would let them see, and the wi-fi signal was decent on one side of the room. A kitchenette nestled itself in the wall, with a small alchemy attachment to make homework possible for the impending Potions Class. Beds were set on opposite walls, with a bathroom on the far end, and small dining table for two at the center. Each student had a private closet and a dresser, but not much else in the way of storage space.

Drysi was quick to claim the bed on the side with bed with better wi-fi, dropping her things on the bed. She hadn't say much on the trip over, looking a bit more sick than anything. Yet, the moment she plopped her bags down, she shot a spiteful look in Willow's direction.

"Don't touch my things," muttered the scribe, as she began to open her bags.

Willow was itching with excitement as she made her way to the dormitory. Back in England she had attended a boarding school, so dorms and uniforms were nothing new to her; but what was new was enough to leave her in awe. Everything from the Japanese aesthetic, to the magical ambiance, especially the magical ambiance, left her eyes wide with wonder while she examined what would be her living quarters for the foreseeable future. There was nothing that could spoil this for her, at least if she had anything to say about it.

Upon entering her room, the one thing that could ruin this for her open its mouth. Minding herself so that she didn't end up in an aggravating cycle of arguing with Drysi. "I won't touch anything of yours, so long as you do likewise," Willow said as she walked over to the window. While initially annoyed by the lack of decorum on the Welsh girl's part, the English girl had no problem with her bed since it meant the morning sun would be shining right in on all three of Drysi's eyes. As a morning person, it wouldn't have minded Willow either way, but since she would be awake anyway meant that she could control the curtains.

Turning from the window, she made to start unpacking her bags. There were the requisite clothes, toiletries, and beauty supplies, but the only electronic device she had was her phone; and the most populous item were a collection of books that she began stacking on her shelf over her desk. Holding on to one book in particular, she made sure the bookmark was still in place before setting on top of the desk. She was half way through it, but in hindsight saw a bit of humor in ready a fantasy series with all that had happened. She would be damned though if she didn't finish the saga, and she still enjoyed the author.

With her stuff unpacked, Willow flopped down on her bed with a contented sigh.

Humming to herself Vrey rocked back on her heels as she squat calmly in front of the door Drysi and Willow had ushered themselves fractiously behind. It was a locked door. Vrey had listened to the tumblers settle in to sleep as she had watched from down the hall. Tilting her head before grinning at the expanse of wood in front of her the small girl made a small friendly wave at the door.

Then scootched closer to the door with another nod towards the inanimate object. The tumblers had settled in so it wouldn't do to unsettle them without some manner of manners directed towards their impending unfortunates.

"Entering unbidden if made unbroken: a knightly virtue." Vrey stated in a near whisper as she set her hand against the door. Caradoc agreed to the sentiment as it was made - it was rude to create unprovoked damages but to be meek towards an obstacle was unseemly. Humming more in a scritching, keyless progression the teen placed her gloved hand against the door. From under buckles and seeping forth from seams green tendrils sprouted. The thin probes fanned about the door harmlessly despite an ominous hissing that scratched out in the wake of each movement.

On the other side of the obstacle a multitude of the armatures moved in a picture by picture fashion - first showing nothing but small points of light, then sprouting to searching the other side with no perceived motion from one position to the next. In a manner of seconds the doorknob's base plate was lifted and screws left to lightly hit the floor.

As her side of the door's knob fell Vrey caught it happily and then pushed the door open. Gathering a set of plastic bags sitting in a pile behind her the teen sprung forward and into the room. "Hallo." Vrey's monotone breached out as she beamed towards the kitchenette without looking at either of her fellow students. Ducking down to look at the floor level cabinets as she strode into the small section place off from the rest of the room the bald teen was momentarily out of sight. As she continued to hum to herself she jerked one of the bags of snacks into the air and danced it for both Drysi and Willow to see. "Approbation gifts as an overture on the embroilation of a new home."

The bag was dropped and it and the gauntleted arm disappeared from view. The clear sound of rummaging plastic and cabinets being closed and opened as they were stocked could be heard.

Before Vrey's entry, Drysi went about her business, choosing to ignore the other girl. She had a few more bags that Willow, with an arrangement of clothes and shoes being sorted first. The Welshgirl had a variety of blouses, shorts, t-shirts, and skirts. More notable was her arrangement of shoes, various brands of nice ones with a few sets of sneakers, and a set of sturdy looking hiking boots. Next came a bag filled with books and knick-knacks, subjects ranged from divination to evoking basics along with a few fantasy novels. She set little figurines around her desk space with a few other neat bits: a geode carved like a skull, a chrome sphere that floated over a dais, and a picture frame with multiple images within the square. Once her desk was arranged, she proceeded to pull out a monstrous looking laptop, a charging station for USB devices, and what looked like a Wi-fi adapter. Next to it she sat a tablet and stylus.

With a sigh, she looked at her phone, checking the time. Then tossed a bored, three-eyed look in Willow's direction. She flattened her mouth, and pondered if she should try to make some kind of amenable arrangements to being civil while in the room. Being an uncivilized druid, Willow likely wouldn't understand, but perhaps she would be an exception to the rule. As meat-headed as she was, she didn't exactly live up to the image Drysi had conjured in her mind. Maybe they could be friends, given the chance.

"Will--," the young Maelgwyn's words were cut short by the falling door-knob. Drysi's eyes went wide as she watched the construct enter their room and proceed to make herself at home. The scribe despised to be interrupted when she was about to speak, especially when she had actually worked up the gumption to do so! She stared at Vrey, and then at Willow, as if expecting her to do something. The gesture only seemed to remind Drysi why she was at odds with the englishgirl.

"You!" broiled Drysi, her expression fuming with a familiar vitriol, throwing a finger at Vrey, "Vrey! Fix our door right now, or you will not be welcome here. You will knock when you wish to be let in."

Willow watched on and off as Drysi unpacked, taking a certain interest in the fantasy novels the Welshgirl unpacked. It made her feel better knowing that even mages continued to enjoy the genre. She would have to strike up a conversation about authors at some point. In the meantime, she contented herself with relaxing on her bed while considering what to do with the rest of the day; probably take a walk around the grounds outside and do some drawing, or read once it got darker. After a little bit, it sounded like Drysi had finished unpacking, and Willow perked up when it sounded like the other was about to speak. Though when the sound of falling metal called her attention elsewhere.

Sitting up in her bed, Willow watched in confusion as Vrey invited herself in. Looking between the odd girl and Drysi, it seemed Willow wasn't the only one perplexed. When Drysi looked to be expecting her to add to the matter, the English girl obliged. Normally, Willow was pretty welcoming to visitors, but this was proper invasion of personal space. "I'm with Drysi on this, have you lost the plot? In what possible instance is dismantling the door knob the obvious course of action rather than bloody knocking? And what are you unpacking?"

"Snacks." Vrey's monotone chirped as her bald head crested into the other girls' view. "Gifts. I extract later to a shelter foreign from this. Time cannot pass that we do not value."

The strange teen popped back out of view and then snaked back out of the offset kitchenette. Crouched in front of the wall leading to the front entrance Vrey looked quizzically from Willow then to Drysi. Rocking a single back and forth on her heels the squatting girl tilted her head in confusion as her attention switched to the door.

"The portal was made fixed. I do not wish rudeness but-" Vrey's eyes swiveled back towards the roommates and a small frown signalling that they were daft flicked past her muscles. "-you would like a re-breaking?"

from outside in the hallway, the confusion that is Vrey was broken, at least temporarily, by a pair of voices coming down the hallway. Two young girls' voices were made apparent, one somewhat familiar, but the other entirely new and foreign (especially since said voice was speaking in Japanese with a native accent). soon, their quiet footsteps were heard, until they shuffled to a stop, right in front of the door.

"Well, this is the room they told me, but... something seems off..." came the familiar voice of the blonde, half-Japanese Katerina.
"Should we knock anyway?" came the second, now in fluent, if heavily accented, English.

after a few moments, more than likely punctuated by a shrug or perhaps some good old fashioned hesitation, a series of curt, sharp knocks was heard, as the door swung gently open a little, though not enough to reveal whom was behind the action of knocking.

"The portal is meant to be blocked to keep out the rabble and the malcontents, this is our room!" growled Drysi, dramatically throwing a hand in Willow's direction to indicate the chamber's ownership. The girl's brilliant, green eyes were almost glowing in the discontent, the sharpness of her glare was almost prismatic. The otherworldly races of mage-folk all seemed to have magnificent features, all seeming to shape around their state of mind. Like other Triclops and Cyclops, Drysi's eyes were very expressive, and eye-catching. She pointed at the door then, insisting on the open spot where the knob had been. "Replace what you dismantled and do so while you are on the other side of the door."

When the sound of more visitors came on the other side of the door, those eyes widened, all three shifting to the sound's origin. Not more people! The scribe stomped to the door, and slammed it shut, her thin fingers splayed out on the flat surface. The flustered mage threw a look at Vrey, appearing to fume, "Now."

"Harmfulness was not inherent to our approached temperament." Vrey stated as one entire half of her body folded at the waist in a wrenchingly quick bow. The stoop in posture continued as the teen slunk under Drysi - twisting to stay as far from contact as possible - and then crouched in front of the door. Tendrils folded into space and shunted enough of the door open for Vrey to fit her fingers into a crack.

The girl then drew the door open with enough of a constant pressure that Drysi slid across the floor alongside the momentum of her bulwark.

When a crack was available large enough for Vrey to fit through she shifted out into the hall. More tendrils trailed behind her and shuttered the opening the girl had forced through. Without looking up or unfolding from her crouch Vrey turned back towards the door and placed her hand firmly against the wood. "Apologies." The word was nodded to the door itself. "There is a requirement of returning to prevent an imminent breakings up."

On the other side green helpers massed about the fallen knob and its screws and jerked into motion to carry the apparatus back towards its mounting.

As the door was opened by forces beyond the comprehension of those on either side of it, the duo in the hallway backed up and away from the man-made barrier. When Vrey arrived through the gap, their indignation at the earlier slamming of the door was mostly forgotten.

"Ah, so, this id, um, Vrey I think?" Katerina announced to the person beside her. "Although I don't think this is her room...

Next to Kat, Vrey might notice a very tall, thin Japanese girl carrying a pair of swords at her side as well as a small bag over one shoulder.
