Nolan Brodie stepped outside of his small home as he pulled a pack of cigarettes out of his jacket pocket. He popped one in his mouth and lifted his lighter, and as he lit it up he gazed skyward with a very uninterested look on his face. Breathing slowly, he let the cigarette do its work as he scratched the stubble on his chin.
The twenty-something man let his mind go blank as he tried to leave the stress of his day behind him. Although no matter how much he tried his head kept nagging him about his lack of income. Since coming to Coulee he had only been able to land occasional jobs as a freelance photographer. With a smoke filled sigh Nolan thought back to before the war when he had a steady job as a photographer for a newspaper.
As he stared at the sky he caught sight of a flash of light. “A shooting star, huh? Heh, maybe I could wish for a photography job, or hell, any job would do at this point I s’pose,†Nolan joked lightly to himself as he took another dreg on his cigarette. “Pish, yeah right. If anything that star is just something bad anyway. Sure was pretty while it lasted.â€
With that said Nolan threw the butt of his cigarette on the ground and stepped on it before turning to go inside. However he stopped himself just before opening the door, deciding that tonight he felt like taking a quick walk around town for going inside he would only see the same mess that had been there before. Not really sure why, Nolan found himself wishing more and more that that shooting star would bring a change; change what exactly Nolan didn’t really care anymore.
