Hamilton Station & Planet/Moons (Lycus)

Post by Phe0n1x »

Planet: Lycus
Type: water (ice?) planet, no life. Has low concentrations of Nitrogen but high concentration of oxygen and frozen Helium and Methane under the oceans. The planet may actually be an ice planet in a warm cycle.
Moons: 2
Moon one is partially destroyed and probably was an asteroid
Moon two is a normal moon about the size of our moon however it is high in rare earth metals.
--------------------
Hamilton Station, named after the Hamilton Cylinders, is in orbit above Saturn's moon Titan Lycus's 2nd moon in Alpha Centauri. It was the Terran's first attempt at a space station beyond the Asteroid Belt local system. Since its original construction, the station has been piece-mealed in upgrades. Each upgrade had the "newest and best" living conditions of the time thus inviting the upper echelon to move in. Consequently, the majority of the station consists of varying degrees of ghettos and poverty all living in antiquated and sub-standard living conditions. While attempts have been made to improve the oldest parts of the station, all ventures have been canceled due to the gang warfare that takes place in the dilapidated hubs. The security force often consists of the undesirables from the lower levels trying to push their way up to a cushy life.

Since the cataclysm 14 years ago, numerous refugees escaped to Hamilton Station and has since become over crowded. New plans are in the works to expand the station once again. However, many activists are petition yet another attempt to instead refurbish two of the three preexisting rings.

Design: Rings with centrifuge on each level
Number of rings: 3 (4th in planning)
Diameter of Centrifuge: 1mi
Outer Ring Diameter: 3.18mi
Inner Ring Diameter: 2.18mi
Outer Ring Circumference: 10mi
Inner Ring Circumference: 6.85mi
Ring Width: 1mi

Rings: living space
Centrifuge: administration, maintenance, main transportation

Transportation between rings:
Elevators take you to and from the centrifuge
Passageways between rings (the "streets") allow normal individuals to transverse the rings

The "streets" are the most dangerous parts of the station, gangs hunker down in the area and rob innocents and destroy other gangs.

Security Force: Before 4042, the Station Security was military personnel. Since 4042, the Security force is composed mostly of volunteers from the ghettos who wish to improve their life and have a steady income. Despite this, there is a rigorous exam before being granted a badge; a background check, physical fitness test, a mental test, and a two week course on how to be Station Security.

Background:
End of 4023: Rushed construction began on Hamilton Station in order to display the might of the Terrans
4028: Construction completed; influx of citizens causes the Administration to begin an immediate addition of another ring
4031: Second ring completed; first ring becomes a ghetto due to neglect and the exodus of the upper echelon to the new ring
4033: With the destruction of Earth, a third ring is commissioned due to the overcrowding
4035: Rushed completion of 3rd ring caused 12 deaths; due to this accident, the hull on each ring, as well as the insulation, was doubled
4036: attempt at refurbishing the first ring fails after 43 deaths in work crew due to gang warfare
4037: After setbacks and re-designing the hulls of all the rings, the third ring was completed. This ring was built for the previous inhabitants; refugees were placed in the first two rings resulting in the formation of ghettos and gangs in the second ring
4040: population stabilizes and levels off as gang war increases
4041: second attempt to refurbish the first ring and now second ring; attempt fails after 33 deaths in refurbishing crew due to gang warfare
4042: Station Security tightens down its watch and allow citizens to join their ranks
4047: 4th ring rumored of being added; activists petition to refirbish the first two rings instead

Scant information in some parts, but it's a good start. I say we run with it.

It's interesting, and I like the idea of the station itself; My problem is with it's placement.

As a large station within the same System as Earth; Why would it have been left alone by the Drathonians who destroyed the planet? it's a sizeable population center that could have been easily wiped out with little effort, so the fact that it would have remained- especially with a stream of refugee ships heading to it- is a bit of a stretch for now.
