Brief Summary: Sean was born, and lived, decades before the Drathonian betrayal. The son Richard Kerning, who was an officer within the military, he was moved around frequently during his early life. Due to strong influences from his father, Sean enrolled into active service at the age of 18. After boot camp he decided to specialize as a pilot. After secondary education, Sean was put into Green Squadron as Green Ten.
Over the years he fought several engagements, most of which consisted of putting down would be rebellions, and began to rise through the ranks. Seven years past and Sean had been promoted to Captain and became second in command of Green Squadron. Sean, now 30, had since been promoted to Major, and, after a tragic end due to an ambush set up by rebels while on a scouting mission, he took over as acting CO of Green Squadron after the death of the former CO. Not escaping unscathed himself, he spent time on a medical frigate recovering. It was here where Sean would meet a nurse by the name of Jana, she would one day become his wife.
Less than a year later the two were married and Jana became pregnant. The baby was a boy, and Sean named him Marcus. The boy was the single best thing that had ever happened to Sean. The aging pilot adored the boy and hated every moment he had to spend away from the boy.
More years passed and Sean, now almost 48, was getting on in years. His son, Marcus, joined the military and trained as a pilot. By age 18 Sean's son was a prodigy and was flying in Green Squadron under the command of his father, but after Sean was almost killed in a later skirmish as a result of breaking formation in order to help his son, the old pilot figured it was about time for him to get off of the front lines.
He thus applied for a position as a member aboard the bridge of Green Squadron's base ship. He was given the role of Head Navigator, which, to Sean's surprise, he was good at. With a naturally calculating mind, Sean was very good at working in the course of astro-navigation. While in this position, Sean devised several new techniques that are now used fleet wide for faster-than-light travel.
By the age of 55, Sean had grown tired of military life and retired.
Sean received the best retirement present he could have asked for. He was going to be a grandfather. Unfortunately, due to complications with the child birth, Marcus' wife passed away. The two offered to help raise the newborn baby, as Marcus was only 20 and also active CO of Green Squadron, but the young man refused.
Seven years later, Sean and his wife Jana received word that their son was fatally wounded during a practice mission. Apparently there was a malfunction somewhere within the engines which resulted in Marcus' ship breaking apart during a high-stress maneuver. The two parents were devastated, and the only thing left to remember their child was their orphaned grandson, Steven, who they took in.
Sean, despite how much he cherished his grandchild, had already been scarred more than any battle wound could. For the longest time whenever he looked at Steven, it was always was a painful look on his face. It was the death of his son that pushed Sean over the edge and irreversibly changed his personality.
But as time passed, the pain of losing his only son diminished, but never really went away. Sean did manage to devote himself now to making up for the loss of his son by doing all he could to make sure Steven was raised properly. Years later, after convinced he had cried his last tear after the death of his son, he teared up one last time as his Steven went off to start pilots training just like past generations.
Now, after his long time retirement home Ovid was suddenly and brutally attacked by the Drathonians, and narrowly escaping the moon in the following evacuation, he has received an offer to come out of retirement and take up a roll as a Fleet Admiral for the Terran Fleet. Following in the footsteps of the immortalized Cinncinnatus, he agreed to come back solely for the purpose of aiding the pursuit of a quick finish to the war so that he can go back and live out the rest of his life in peace.
